Director Penny Lane’s previous award-winning documentaries examined Nixon through home movies (“Our Nixon,” 2013) and an early cure for impotence via goat testicle transplant, (“NUTS!”). For her third, she’s taken on Satanism.
“Hail Satan?” captures the recent rise and public actions of the Satanic Temple, revealing the fun, charming side of a religious movement that shows up to protests in black robes or adopts a highway and stabs trash with pitchforks. While their methods can be outrageous, Lane explores the meaning behind the madness in the Temple’s fight for social and political justice.
